‘Tis the Season for Temporary Jobs

The holiday here season is almost here, and with it will come hundreds of thousands of temporary jobs – most of them in retailing. If you’re thinking of securing one of those positions, now is the time to act.

Retailers like to line-up their seasonal hires well in advance of the actual holiday shopping season. So, many of them are opening up their hiring processes now.

One of the most notable announcements we’ve seen so far came from Seattle-based Nordstrom, which said last week that it is hiring 11,800 seasonal employees.

This certainly represents a lot of short-term opportunity.

Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack will hire approximately 10,000 people in sales and stock positions at its 120 Nordstrom stores in the U.S. and Canada and 188 Nordstrom Rack stores in the U.S.

The company will hire 1,600 people to support its ecommerce business at its fulfillment centers located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Elizabethtown, Penn. and San Bernardino, Calif.

It will also fill 150 seasonal roles at HauteLook in Los Angeles in Member Care and Photo Studio operations, and around 100 at Trunk Club facilities in Chicago in Stock, Inventory and Customer Experience.

As you can see, the seasonal opportunities in retail include both “front of house” and “back of house” positions. There will also be related jobs created in third-party fulfillment, shipping and logistics.

The common denominator in all of these opportunities is that time is already running out. If you want to work in a seasonal position this year, now is the time to put your application in.
