What You Can Do for Elders

A majority of Americans (77%) polled say they are worried about the safety of an older loved one, yet few take any steps to do anything about it.

The good news is there are simple things that you can make happen, that will have a huge impact on an elder’s ability to do basic things, safely.

In the survey, senior care resource Caring.com found that among seniors living alone:

  • 46% do not have grab bars in the shower
  • 63% do not have a raised toilet seat
  • 64% do not have an emergency response system
  • 76% do not have an entrance ramp

Providing these things for the senior in your life is a fairly simple, and reasonable proposition. And it can make a world of difference.

Caring.com, citing Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) figures, said that 2.5 million adults 65 years and older are treated for unintentional fall injuries each year.

How many of these ER visits could be prevented with a few simple upgrades in and around the house? It’s certainly something to think about this holiday season.
