Job Openings in Flux

The number of job openings fell to 7.1 million on the last business day of February, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports.

Over the month, hires and separations were little changed at 5.7 million and 5.6 million, respectively.

Within separations, the quits rate was unchanged at 2.3 percent and the layoffs and discharges rate was little changed at 1.2 percent.

Hires fell for government (-40,000), construction (-73,000), nondurable goods manufacturing (-33,000), and state and local government education (-22,000). The number of hires was little changed in all four regions.

Total separations increased in educational services (+30,000), but decreased in nondurable goods manufacturing (-32,000) and real estate and rental and leasing (-26,000). The number of total separations was little changed in all four regions.

Quits increased in educational services (+23,000) but decreased in real estate and rental and leasing (-15,000). The number of quits was little changed in all four regions.

The number of layoffs and discharges decreased in federal government (-4,000). The number of layoffs and discharges was little changed in all four regions.
