Billions Participated in Global Handwashing Day, and Didn’t Even Know It
There’s a Day for just about everything, and the everyday practice of handwashing got its due on October 15. Many people missed the big day, but washed their hands nonetheless.
Nonetheless, commercial washroom products maker Bradley Corp. sees handwashing as serious business.
The company points out that on a global scale, the hand washing habit has yet to completely take hold.
There is still work to be done to increase awareness and understanding of the effectiveness of washing away illness-inducing germs and bacteria.
Hence, a group called the Global Public-Private Partnership for Handwashing (PPPHW) established Global Handwashing Day.
According to the PPPHW, research shows hand washing with soap can cut the incidence of diarrhea by almost one-half and acute respiratory infections by nearly one-quarter.
In all, this simple action can help prevent illnesses that contribute to the deaths of 1.7 million children worldwide each year.
So, as simple an act as handwashing provides a powerful way to save millions of lives annually.
