Credit Union Insurer Wins Kudos for Ethics

An insurance company that harkens back to the early days of the U.S. credit union movement has been recognized as being one of the world’s most ethical companies.

CUNA Mutual Group – which dates back to the 1930s – was started by Credit Union National Association specifically to provide insurance products for credit union members. Today, the group offers life insurance, investments, mortgage insurance and annuity products, among other things. The group has more than $17 billion in assets.

Each year The Ethisphere Institute recognizes companies that meet its high standards for ethical behavior. The institute is an independent research center promoting best practices in corporate ethics and governance.

Ethisphere reviewed nominations from companies in more than 23 countries and 37 industries, and this year recognized 143 companies as 2014 World’s Most Ethical Companies.

The group rates companies on core competencies involving corporate governance, risk, sustainability compliance and ethics.

For two years running, Ethisphere has cited CUNA Mutual Group for meeting their highest standards. The company was ranked highly for its ethics and compliance program; its reputation, leadership and innovation: governance; corporate citizenship and responsibility; and culture of ethics.

What this means is that CUNA Mutual Group rises above most other companies in a number of areas that have ethical components, including how they treat their employees, their customers and the communities in which they do business. This is quite an achievement – especially for an insurance company.
