A Well Bred Turkey

More Americans are opting to buy holiday turkeys that are Certified Humane by Humane Farm Animal Care (HFAC), the group said.

HFAC is a group that was founded in May 2003 by Adele Douglass. It has since has certified by more than 110 companies, representing thousands of farms and millions of farm animals.

To reach the Certified Humane standard, companies need to show that their animals are treated in a human fashion from birth through slaughter.

“For turkeys, this means they must receive a nutritious diet without antibiotics or hormones and must be raised with shelter, resting areas and space sufficient to support natural behaviors, such as flapping wings, moving around freely and perching above ground at night,” said Adele Douglass, in a statement.

So, get yourself a Certified Humane turkey this season. As you’re carving that bird up for dinner, you can rest assured that its brief life was spent in relative comfort and happiness. Bon appetite!
