A May Shower Brings a June Wedding

Why are so many weddings held in June? The Census Bureau has a theory, and it’s pretty gross.

It seems that back in the day people only took one bath per year. This annual bath took place in May.

Because people were still reasonably fresh-smelling in June, (yes, a month later), they chose this month to get married.

It must have made sense at the time.

Anyway, the tradition has endured – even through to our modern era of indoor plumbing and daily bathing.

These days, more than 2.1 million weddings take place each year in the U.S.
